Use stubble as Biofuel
The Union Government is working on a plan to use stubble as a biofuel and manure as a part of an effort to deal with stubble burning that was often cited as a source of pollution in northern India. Environment Minister Bhupendra Yadav told the lok Sabha.
The Minister, who is yet to make a detailed reply to a discussion on climate change, stated that the centre had completely decriminalized stubble in the air quality commission act.
Mr. Yadav was responding to Shiromani Akali dal member Harsimrat Kaur Badal, who alleged that farmers from Punjab and Haryana were being defamed by the Delhi Government for cousing air pollution and criminal cases are filled against them. Making a short intervention during a discussion on climate change in the lower house, the Minister said the National Thermal Power Coorporation had procured 3000 tonnes of stubble to be used as biofuel and would study the result.
Stubble burning is an act of setting fire to crop residue to remove them from the field to sow the next crop.
In order to plant the next winter crop (Rabi Crop) farmer in Haryana and Punjab have to move in a very short interval and if they are late, due to short winter these days, they might face considerable losses. Therefore, burning is the cheapest and fastest way to get rid of the stubble.
Effect of stubble burning
Pollution:- open stubble burning emits, amounts of toxic pollutants in the atmosphere which contains harmful gases like methane(CH4) , carbon monoxide (CO) , volatile organic compound etc.
After the release in the atmosphere, these pollutants dispuse in the surrounding, may undergo a physical and chemical transformation and eventually adversely affect human health by cousing a thick blanket of smog.
